The Workings of the Social World
The Department of Economics, Education, and Sociology explores the structures, systems, and ideas that shape human behavior, institutions, and learning. Core courses across the three disciplines provide students with the tools to think critically and systematically about economic systems, educational practices, and social dynamics. Students gain strong analytical, research, and communication skills that prepare them to address real-world challenges through data, theory, and action.
The department offers an active internship program, and all majors are encouraged to enroll in at least one internship course while in good academic standing at the University. These opportunities—enhanced by our location in Washington, D.C.—connect students with leading organizations in government, education, policy, and research.
Graduates are well-prepared for a wide range of professional paths and advanced study. Many go on to careers in education, business, public policy, criminal justice, nonprofit work, and social research. Students interested in deepening their skills in analysis and evidence-based decision-making can supplement their studies with courses in statistics, data analysis, and advanced research methods.
